Germany to ban China’s Huawei from future 6G network

Germany has introduced new legislation that will allow the Interior Ministry to restrict the use of components from high-risk suppliers in critical infrastructure, including telecommunications. As part of this framework, the government has stated that Chinese-made equipment will not be permitted in future 6G networks.

The development follows earlier discussions regarding Huawei and ZTE’s involvement in Germany’s 5G rollout. A phased approach to removal remains in place: equipment from these suppliers must be taken out of mobile core networks by the end of 2026, and critical network-management functionality in 5G RAN equipment must be removed by the end of 2029.

The legislation aligns with the EU’s NIS2 Directive and extends to other sectors such as energy, transport and healthcare. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated the government’s position on 6G components last week, ahead of further discussions at a digital sovereignty summit co-hosted by Germany and France.
